절망하지 말아라

“우리의 주가는 변덕스럽게 움직일 것입니다. 현재 경영진 아래 지난 60년 동안 세 번이나 그랬던 것처럼 앞으로 50% 정도 급락하는 일이 있겠죠. 그러나 절망하지는 마십시오. 미국은 반드시 회복할 것이고, 버크셔 주가도 마찬가지입니다.”

Our stock price will move capriciously, occasionally falling 50% or so as has happened three times in 60 years under present management. Don’t despair; America will come back and so will Berkshire shares.



친절함의 가치는 헤아릴 수 없다

“위대함은 막대한 돈을 모으거나, 엄청난 유명세를 얻거나, 정치적 권력을 쥐는 것으로 이루어지지 않습니다. 남을 돕는 그 모든 작은 행동이 세상을 돕는 것입니다. 친절은 비용이 들지 않지만, 그 가치는 헤아릴 수 없습니다. 종교를 막론하고 황금률(본인이 대접받고 싶은 만큼 대접하라)보다 나은 삶의 지침은 없습니다.”

Greatness does not come about through accumulating great amounts of money, great amounts of publicity or great power in government. When you help someone in any of thousands of ways, you help the world. Kindness is costless but also priceless. Whether you are religious or not, it’s hard to beat The Golden Rule as a guide to behavior.



과거의 실수에 주저앉지 말아라

“제 인생 후반부가 전반부보다 훨씬 낫다고 자신 있게 말할 수 있습니다. 과거의 실수로 자신을 채찍질하지 마세요. 조금이라도 배우고, 앞으로 나아가세요. 개선은 언제나 늦지 않습니다.”

I’m happy to say I feel better about the second half of my life than the first. Don’t beat yourself up over past mistakes – learn at least a little from them and move on. It is never too late to improve.

“노벨상으로 유명한 알프레드 노벨의 일화를 기억하세요. 그는 형이 죽었을 때 신문에 자신이 죽었다는 오보를 보았고 그 안에 적힌 자신의 부정적 평가에 충격받아 삶을 바꾸었습니다. 당신의 부고 기사에 담기길 바라는 내용이 있다면 그에 맞는 삶을 지금부터 사십시오.”

Remember Alfred Nobel, later of Nobel Prize fame, who – reportedly – read his own obituary that was mistakenly printed when his brother died and a newspaper got mixed up.
